Partner Visa Pathways
Australia provides visa pathways for eligible partners of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens. The appropriate pathway depends on the relationship and the applicant’s individual circumstances.
ONSHORE PARTNER VISA
Subclass 820 & 801
For eligible spouses and de facto partners applying in Australia. The Subclass 820 is the temporary stage, followed by consideration for the permanent Subclass 801 visa.
OFFSHORE PARTNER VISA
Subclass 309 & 100
For eligible spouses and de facto partners applying outside Australia. The Subclass 309 is the provisional stage, followed by consideration for the permanent Subclass 100 visa.
PROSPECTIVE MARRIAGE VISA
Subclass 300
For eligible applicants outside Australia who intend to come to Australia to marry their prospective spouse and subsequently pursue the relevant Partner visa pathway.

Financial Aspects
Evidence showing how the couple manages financial matters and shared financial commitments.

Social Aspects
Evidence showing how the relationship is recognised by family, friends and the wider community.
* Every relationship is different, and the appropriate supporting evidence will depend on the couple’s individual circumstances.
Relationship Evidence Matters
Partner visa applications require evidence demonstrating that the relationship meets the relevant requirements. The evidence needed will depend on the individual circumstances and type of relationship.

Nature of the Household
Evidence relating to living arrangements, household responsibilities and the couple’s shared domestic life.

Nature of the Commitment
Evidence demonstrating the history of the relationship, ongoing commitment, communication and plans for the future.
Family Visa Options
Australia’s family migration program also provides pathways for certain parents, children and other eligible relatives. Each visa category has its own eligibility, sponsorship and application requirements.
Parent Visas
Subclasses 103, 143, 173, 804, 864 & 884
Temporary and permanent pathways for eligible parents. Requirements vary by subclass and may include the Balance of Family test.
Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa
Subclass 870
A temporary pathway allowing eligible sponsored parents to stay in Australia for up to 3 or 5 years at a time.
Child Visas
Subclasses 101, 102, 445 & 802
Visa pathways for eligible children, adopted children and certain dependent children to join or remain with family in Australia.
Other Family Visas
Subclasses 114, 115, 116, 835, 836 & 838
Limited pathways for eligible aged dependent relatives, remaining relatives and carers who meet the relevant requirements.
Understanding Parent Visa Options
Parent visa pathways can differ significantly in their eligibility requirements, costs and processing arrangements. Certain permanent Parent visa subclasses require applicants to satisfy the Balance of Family test. This test considers the number and location of the applicant’s children and stepchildren.
Parent and certain Other Family visa categories may also be subject to capping and queueing, which can result in lengthy processing periods.
Understanding the available pathways before applying can help families identify which options may be appropriate for their circumstances.
