Skilled and Family Visa Processing Priorities Changed: What Applicants Should Know

A change in processing priority can affect when Home Affairs looks at an application, but it does not change the visa criteria or create a guaranteed decision date.

What changed

Home Affairs says three new Ministerial Directions now prioritise onshore applicants across skilled and family programs. Processing order has changed; the legal criteria for grant have not.

Apply the new processing-priority advice to relevant applications from 25 July 2026. Check the individual Ministerial Direction and Home Affairs guidance before relying on an applicant’s location or category.

Who may be affected

Clients with pending skilled or family applications, especially where location at lodgement affects priority.

Time estimates and lodgement strategy may differ for onshore and offshore clients. Priority does not guarantee approval or a fixed processing time.

What this does not mean

Priority affects processing order only. It does not guarantee faster processing, visa approval or a decision by a particular date.

Important points

• Priority changes the order in which applications may be considered; it does not change Schedule 2 criteria.

• A priority category is not a service standard and does not create a guaranteed decision date.

• Location, visa stream and any specified cohorts must be checked against the applicable Direction.

• Do not recommend a withdrawal or re-lodgement solely to seek priority without a full risk analysis.
